Second KLM strike announced

Amsterdam Airport strike threatens passengers again

After the ground staff strike on Wednesday 10 September, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is facing more disruption. Dutch trade union FNV has announced that KLM ground staff will stage another strike on Wednesday 17 September from 08:00 to 12:00. This will be the second KLM strike in just a week.

Pilots first, ground staff second

The new action follows growing anger among ground staff after KLM reached a lucrative agreement with its pilots.

According to the unions, this “luxury deal” widens the gap between pilots and ground workers, who are demanding job security, compensation for heavy work and protection of their purchasing power.

KLM strike disrupted hundreds of flights

The first KLM strike on 10 September caused major disruption at Amsterdam Airport. In just two hours, more than 200 KLM flights were cancelled, affecting tens of thousands of passengers.

With the planned four-hour walkout, the impact of the Amsterdam Airport strike is expected to be much larger.

The busiest hours may be between 10:00 and 12:00, when most KLM flights to the United States are scheduled to depart. It remains unclear whether these flights will be cancelled or simply delayed.

Passenger rights during an Amsterdam Airport strike

If your flight is cancelled or delayed by more than three hours due to the KLM strike, you may be entitled to compensation under European Regulation 261/2004. Depending on the distance of your flight, the compensation amounts are:

  • €250 for flights up to 1,500 km
  • €400 for flights within the EU over 1,500 km and all other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
  • €600 for flights over 3,500 km

This compensation comes on top of a refund or rebooking of your ticket.
