Strike in Bulgaria: are you entitled to compensation?

If the airline is responsible for preventing the strike and fails to do so, then you may be eligible for compensation. This includes situations where the airline’s own employees, whether they work on the plane or on the ground, go on strike. Essentially, if the airline could have done something to stop the strike and didn’t, then they could be held accountable and you may be entitled to compensation.

Why passengers may not be entitled to compensation during a strike in Bulgaria

Filing a claim for flight disruptions caused by strikes is often a fruitless endeavor. This is because when you buy a ticket, you’re essentially entering into a contract with the airline to transport you from one destination to another. If they’re unable to fulfill that obligation due to external factors like a strike, then you’re not eligible for compensation.

Why you might not be eligible for compensation during a strike in Bulgaria

You are not entitled to compensation if the strike was caused by personnel other than the airline’s own personnel. For example:

  • air traffic control
  • security personnel
  • baggage handlers
  • other ground personnel

Strike in Bulgaria? This is what you are entitled to

If the airline has taken measures to prevent the impact of the strike, you won’t be entitled to compensation. However, that doesn’t mean you should be left stranded. If your flight is delayed for more than 2 hours, the airline has a duty of care.

This means that they must provide you with food and drinks. Additionally, if your wait time extends overnight, the airline should arrange accommodation for you. If they fail to do so, you can make the arrangements yourself and seek reimbursement by submitting your receipts.

Know your rights: compensation for delayed or canceled flights

If your flight is delayed upon arrival for more than 3 hours, and the airline is responsible, you may be eligible for compensation. The amount you receive will vary depending on the distance traveled. For flights shorter than 1500 km, you can receive €250 per ticket, and for flights over 3500 km, the amount increases to €600 per ticket.
