Lufthansa CityLine strike, possible disruptions to European flights
A potential strike at Lufthansa CityLine is looming after pilots at the regional subsidiary overwhelmingly voted in favor of possible industrial action. No strike date has been announced yet, but the risk of delays and cancellations within the Lufthansa network is increasing.
Short-haul European flights and connecting journeys are most likely to be affected if disruptions occur.
Lufthansa strike: what is happening and why are pilots threatening to strike?
The tensions arose after collective bargaining negotiations between the pilots and management broke down. According to the pilots’ union, Lufthansa’s latest offer does not meet their demands.
At the same time, uncertainty surrounding the gradual phase-out of Lufthansa CityLine and the transfer of routes to lower-cost subsidiaries has increased unrest among staff. This combination of stalled negotiations and restructuring plans has significantly raised the likelihood of strike action.
Lufthansa CityLine mainly operates short-haul feeder flights within Europe, connecting passengers to long-haul flights across the Lufthansa Group network. As a result, a strike could impact not only direct flights, but also transfers and connecting flights throughout Europe and beyond.
Right to compensation in case of a Lufthansa CityLine strike
If flights are cancelled or arrive more than three hours late due to a strike by airline staff, this is generally not considered an extraordinary circumstance under EU Regulation 261/2004. In many cases, passengers may therefore be entitled to compensation.
The amount of compensation depends on the flight distance:
- €250 for flights up to 1,500 km
- €400 for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km
- €600 for flights over 3,500 km
In addition, the airline’s duty of care always applies. This includes providing meals, accommodation if necessary, and a rebooking or alternative transport in case of long delays or cancellations.
We will continue to closely monitor developments regarding the potential Lufthansa CityLine strike, and if your flight is delayed or cancelled, compensation can ultimately be claimed through us.
