Flight delayed over 2 hours? TAP Air Portugal must provide care
An unexpected wildcat strike, an unannounced, unofficial action, can leave you stuck at the airport without warning. If your TAP Air Portugal flight is delayed for more than two hours, you’re entitled to basic care.
This includes meals, drinks and, if the delay extends overnight, hotel accommodation and transport. Sometimes the airline issues vouchers; if they don’t, keep your receipts so you can request reimbursement afterward.
You’re not required to accept TAP Air Portugal’s alternative flight
TAP must offer you a replacement flight at no extra cost. In principle, this should be the earliest available option. However, during a strike, many flights may be fully booked, and you might be offered a reroute that no longer makes sense for your travel plans.
If you decline the proposed alternative, the airline is obliged to refund your ticket.
Should TAP fail to provide a suitable replacement, and you book a different flight yourself, the airline must compensate the fare difference.
Tip: Wait for TAP Air Portugal’s final confirmation before rebooking
Availability on other airlines can be limited, and your first thought may be to secure new flights quickly. Even so, it’s wise not to book anything yourself until TAP Air Portugal officially cancels your original flight.
If the strike ends unexpectedly and your flight still operates, you’re unlikely to get your money back for self-booked tickets.
Hit by the TAP Air Portugal strike? You may qualify for compensation
When the disruption is caused by the airline’s own staf, whether pilots, crew or ground personnel, TAP Air Portugal can be held responsible. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, these strikes are not considered extraordinary circumstances.
That means you may be entitled to compensation if your arrival is delayed by more than three hours or if a cancellation is communicated less than 14 days before departure.
The compensation amount depends on the distance of your flight and the timing of the cancellation notice.

- €250 for flights up to 1,500 km
