Will KLM staff go on strike this summer?

These are your rights if your flight is cancelled

In recent weeks, the Dutch unions FNV and CNV announced strike action by KLM ground staff, raising concerns among travellers planning to fly with the airline this summer.

But will the strike actually happen? Initially, it seemed likely, but two separate court rulings have put those plans on hold, for now…

Why do KLM workers want to strike?

The dispute centres on working conditions, scheduling and pay. According to the unions, KLM ground staff have been under pressure for years, facing high workloads and inadequate pay. After negotiations with the airline stalled, the unions announced a series of strike actions to push for better agreements.

Court blocks two planned strikes

The first strike was scheduled for Saturday, 28 June and was due to last 24 hours. However, the Haarlem court prohibited this, citing safety risks at Schiphol Airport.

A second, shorter strike was then scheduled for Wednesday 9 July, from 2 pm to 10 pm. This time, the Amsterdam court intervened. Both KLM and Schiphol had warned that such a strike could endanger airport safety, and the judge agreed.

Is a KLM strike still likely to happen this summer?

It remains a real possibility. The unions have made it clear that they will continue to push for action until a new agreement is reached. Strikes at KLM are not uncommon:

  • In April 2022, for example, a walkout by ground staff caused chaos at Schiphol Airport, with passengers being urged to stay away from the terminal.
  • Ground staff also went on strike over employment conditions in 2019.

With tensions still high, another KLM strike could take place later this summer.

Was your KLM flight cancelled due to a strike? Know your rights!

If your flight was cancelled due to a strike by KLM staff, you are entitled to certain protections under EU Regulation 261/2004.

You can choose between a full refund and an alternative flight.

If you’re stuck at the airport, KLM must provide meals, drinks, and accommodation.

Depending on the distance of your flight, you may also be entitled to financial compensation of up to €600.

If you receive notice that your flight has been cancelled due to strike action, it is important to familiarise yourself with your rights immediately and take the necessary steps to file a claim if you are eligible.
