Large scale strike at Spanish airports causes delays

Ground handling staff have gone on strike at several airports across Spain today. The industrial action is expected to cause significant disruption in the coming days, at a particularly busy time for travellers flying to and from Spain. Passengers should be prepared for delays and longer waiting times at the airport.

Large-scale strike across Spain

The strike affects thirteen airports in Spain, including Madrid, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga, Alicante, Gran Canaria, Tenerife South, Tenerife North, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Ibiza, Bilbao and Valencia.

Groundforce employees began strike action today and are walking out at several times a day on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Menzies staff are also taking part in the strike, on 28 and 29 March and from 2 to 6 April. Travellers are advised to arrive at the airport well in advance of their flight.

Groundforce and Menzies are airport ground handling companies responsible for services such as check-in, boarding and baggage handling.

Why are airport workers striking in Spain?

The strike has been triggered by dissatisfaction over pay and working conditions. Employees of Groundforce and Menzies are using the action to put pressure on their employers.

Because these companies play a key role in airport operations, including baggage handling, boarding and aircraft support, the impact on passengers could be considerable.

No right to compensation

It is important for affected passengers to know that in this case, they are generally not entitled to compensation. Strikes involving airport or ground handling staff are usually considered extraordinary circumstances.

As a result, the airline is not normally required to pay financial compensation. Passengers may still be entitled to care and assistance, such as food, drinks or alternative transport where necessary.
